Expert Generative Search

The generative search page functions much like the standard Expert Search, with AI enhancements that you can toggle on and off.

  1. Search field: Enter a search query following best practices for asking GenSearch questions.
    • When GenSearch is enabled, search as you type is disabled.
    • A service runs that looks for input that is likely to be PII. If possible PII is detected, there is a notification and the query must be modified before it can be submitted.
  2. ExpertAI toggle: Click to enable generative responses to search queries. The initial toggle position can be set by an Admin. Once enabled by a user, the toggle remains enabled for the session unless disabled again by that user.
  3. Generating from: Displays the titles of the top nodes in the site hierarchy from which the GenResponse might be generated. Click a section to apply it as a filter.
  4. Disclaimer: The optional, customizable disclaimer informs GenSearch users that the response is generated using AI, so they know the information may need to be verified.
  5. Response: The GenSearch response appears above the Expert Search results.
  6. Source Articles: The articles that contain the highest scoring Kernels that support the GenSearch response for a query. One or more Kernels can be returned from a single page. 
    • Up to 5 source articles can be displayed in the UI, and they are ordered by relevancy score.
    • If your Kernel limit is set to >5, it is possible that information in the response is not captured as a source article in the UI. The Completions download will list all source articles, even if more than 5 were used.
    • For authenticated users (Authenticated Viewers and Seated members), lock icons are visible to indicate article (page) privacy:
      • Closed lock icon: Indicates the source article is restricted. This applies to any articles that are Private or Semi-Private.
      • Open lock icon: Indicates the source article is Public or Semi-Public, and is available to all site visitors.
      • At this time, permissions related to conditional content are not considered in determining source article privacy.
  7. Feedback icons: Allow you to rate GenSearch results as Helpful (smile) or Not helpful (frown). Once feedback is submitted, the icons are disabled until a new search result is generated.
    • Feedback does not alter responses or teach the model how to respond.
  8. Search results: Traditional Expert Intelligent Search results are shown pushed down on the page.
  9. Search filters: The same search filters you have available on your site are also available to narrow down the source articles for generative responses.
  10. Sparkle icon in search filters: Indicates where the source content lives in your information architecture / site hierarchy.

How to use GenSearch

Ask a question

  1. Navigate to the Search page.
  2. Enable ExpertAI using the toggle button.
  3. Enter a query into the Search field.
  4. Press Enter or click the magnifying glass in the search bar to generate a response.

Modify your query

To change your query and get a different response, edit your query in the Search field and press Enter or click the magnifying glass in the search bar to generate a response.

Refresh the response

Refresh a response with the same query in 3 ways:

  1. Click the magnifying glass in the search bar.
  2. Refresh the page
  3. Toggle the Gen search Off and then On again.

Filter responses

Once a response is generated, use the search filters to choose a subset of pages to generate a response from. For example, filtering by Location will return responses using Kernels from that location in your site hierarchy.

  • You do not need to click the Refresh button to update the response when using filters.
  • Once a filter is clicked, it is applied to the response, and the Generating from:, Source Articles, and GenResponse will differ from the previous results.
  • Continue filtering to refine your results (optional). For example, select a sub-Category within a Category, and then to select a Guide within that sub-Category.

View source material

When a response is generated, the first five unique Kernel sources appear below the GenResponse. The links are clickable and open in a new browser tab so users can access the original content without navigating away from the search results.

Users can only view pages they have permission to see. A lock icon next to the page indicates it is Private or Semi-Private, and an unlocked lock icon indicates the page is Public or Semi-Public.
